Sustiva (Efavirenz) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). It is an antiviral medication that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells from multiplying in your body. Generic Sustiva is the leading drug in HIV combination medication treatment.

Generic Sustiva (efavirenz) is an antiviral medication that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells from multiplying in your body. Generic Sustiva is used to treat HIV, which causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.
Take Generic Sustiva by mouth on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after eating.
Taking Generic Sustiva with food, especially with a high-fat meal, may lead to increased blood levels of Efavirenz.
Take this medicine with a full glass of water.
Take Generic Sustiva at the same time(s) every day, preferably at bedtime unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Continue to use Efavirenz even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Generic Sustiva: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Generic Sustiva may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Sustiva.
Taking this medication will not prevent you from passing HIV to other people. Avoid having unprotected sex or sharing razors or toothbrushes. Talk with your doctor about safe ways to prevent HIV transmission during sex. Sharing drug or medicine needles is never safe, even for a healthy person.
Generic Sustiva may cause serious psychiatric symptoms including confusion, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, aggression, extreme fear, hallucinations, or unusual behavior. Contact your doctor at once if you have any of these side effects, even if you have had them before.
Do not use Generic Sustiva without telling your doctor if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby.
Cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety can add to sleepiness caused by Sustiva. Tell your doctor if you regularly use any of these medicines.
There are many other medicines that can interact with Generic Sustiva, or make it less effective. Before taking Generic Sustiva, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
If you miss a dose of Generic Sustiva, take it as soon as possible. If it is within two hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Store Generic Sustiva at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep out of the reach of children and away from pets.
