Generic Micardis (telmisartan) is classified as as angiotensin receptor blocker. This medication is made to reduce high blood pressure. Generic Micardis works by pacifying blood vessels in the heart to allow blood to flow more smoothly. Reduce the effects and hypertension and lower your risk of troke, heart attack and other serious health factors with Generic Micardis. Generic Micardis is also sometimes used to prevent kidney damage caused by diabetes, and to treat certain cases of heart failure. Consult your doctor before taking Generic Micardis for either above mentioned conditions, or alternative use.

How to take

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

In rare cases, hydrochlorothiazide and telmisartan can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine.

Call your doctor at once if you have a side effect such as:

  • feeling like you might pass out;
  • eye pain, vision problems;
  • swelling, rapid weight gain;
  • fast or pounding heartbeats;
  • urinating less than usual or not at all;
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
  • low sodium (slurred speech, hallucinations, vomiting, severe weakness, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, seizure (convulsions), shallow breathing); or
  • low potassium (confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, limp feeling).

Other common side effects may include:

  • tired feeling;
  • flu symptoms;
  • nausea, diarrhea; or
  • cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat.

Always read the ingredients before taking this or any other medication to ensure that there are no elements that may elicit an allergic reaction.

Before taking Generic Micardis, consult your doctor if you have a history of any of the following medical conditions:
kidney disease, liver problems, hyperkalemia, volume depletion, dehydration, or bile duct blockage.

Do not take Generic Micardis if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding. Immediately contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. It is advised to take effective birth control while being treated with this medication.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines you use, and those you start or stop using during your treatment with hydrochlorothiazide and telmisartan, especially:

  • cholestyramine or colestipol;
  • digoxin;
  • lithium;
  • a barbiturate such as amobarbital, butabarbital, mephobarbital, secobarbital, or phenobarbital;
  • any other blood pressure medicines;
  • any other diuretic or "water pill";
  • NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others;
  • a blood thinner such as warfarin, Coumadin;
  • insulin or oral diabetes medication; or
  • steroids (prednisone and others).

Missed dose

Do not take more than your recommended dosage. Take missed doses as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next treatment.


Keep medication in a cool, dry place away from heat and moisture. Dispose of any unused medication past the point of expiry. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
